Gavin 2000..Big props to Beni B of the Bay Area Hip Hop Coalition for putting together a wonderful showcase at SF's Justice League last night [Wed Feb 16th]. It was a who's who within Hip Hop as every conceivable head from here to Canada and beyond packed the place to the rafters..and I mean that literally. The showcase featured local flavas like Prophets of Rage, Rasco, Planet Asia, Latryx, Blackalicious and Encore to name a few. DJ D-Sharp ripped the ones and twos flawlessly. With each song he dropped the crowd roared in approval. Also on the bill was the Jurassic 5 who came through and wrecked shop. Their deejay Cut Chemist showed and proved is on point skillz. It was a good warm up show for their upcoming tour which kicks off sometime next week in Wallingford Ct at the Oakdale Theater. They will return to the West Coast in toward the end of March when they swing through Seattle and on March 22 they will be back in the Bay Area.. I caught up with J5's Charlie 2NA and asked him to break down the history of the group. He explained that J5 was actually a combination of two groups The Unity Committee and The Rebels of Rhythm. The two groups used to perform during 'open mic' at a spot in South Central LA called The Good Life Cafe. Mutual admiration and respect for each other led to them all hooking up. The rest is history. As for the name Jurassic 5, Charlie said, it came about by accident. His son's mother was trying to be funny when she first heard the group. She asked if they were trying to be like the pioneering emcee group The Fantastic 'Romantic' Five. In the midst of the clowning the name Jurassic which rhymes with Fantastic was tossed out. It sounded good so the they adapted the name. In the tradition of Hip Hop's pioneers, the group has excelled in putting on good performances. Be sure to peep out Jurassic 5's website at http://www.jurassic5.com or email them at mailto:j5mc@aol.com.

While everyone on last night's showcase represented to the fullest, the night clearly belonged to a charismatic and very animated Supernatural who came through with the J5. He took a somewhat restless crowd and got them hyped. He did his usual 'rhyme of the dome' routine. But what really caught the crowd was when he started imitating other emcees. Supernatural set it off when he imitated Rakim, Busta Rhymes, The entire Goodie Mob and the Notorious BIG. It was incredible. People left the place buzzing about Supernatural's performance. Later this week our good friends over at http://www.Hip-Hop.com will be bringing Rakim and MC Lyte to town.. Gavin should be off the hook this week.
